Meet Dixie – Candy Fashion Reproduction Doll from “The Starlet Collection”

This is the newest resident of my “Candy Land”. I named her Dixie, and she is a brunette with brown eyes Candy doll by Charisma Brands, and comes with “The Starlet Collection” wardrobe. I believe she is the latest of Charisma’s Candies, and I have to admit, the quality seems to be betting better and better. My one and only complaint about Charisma’s Candies is the boots, as they are quite difficult to put on, and you better watch out for the stockings which can be torn at the toes while the boots are being pulled on over them. Other than that, the outfits and the doll are splendid. Here’s what Charisma Brands say about their “Starlet” Candy: “Representing a few of the most memorable costumes in film. Dressed in Movie Premiere – a white polyblend halter dress with pin pleating and highlighted with long white evening gloves and high heels. Two additional costumes include: (1) Awards Ceremony, a stunning clingy black evening gown, wrap, a faux pearl necklace, black gloves and pumps and (2) Hollywood Glamour, a gold sleeveless turtle neck dress, leopard print coat and black go-go boots.”

And here are some of my own pictures of this gorgeous doll with her three fabulous outfits.

“Movie Premiere” dress, very Marilyn Monroe. I decided to put the necklace in her hair for the “Princess Tag Game” on Flickr, hence the background in the first picture.

“Hollywood Glamour” is another stunning outfit, and looks beautiful with or without the coat.

And last but not least “Awards Ceremony” . An Audrey Hepburn style dress, another fantastic dress to conclude this incredible collection.

"The Starlet Collection" is so pretty, I’ll have a hard time redressing this doll. However, she can’t go in formal attire every day of the life, wink-wink, and will have to let her hair down sometimes and mingle with my other Candies lol.

Meet Sunny - My Candy Fashion Doll from "The Groovy Collection"

This is Sunny, my Candy Fashion reproduction doll from “The Groovy Collection” by Charisma. Sunny has three original outfits, which include Flower Power, MOD and Paisley. Here's what Charisma Brands say about this doll and her outfits: "Kicking down the cobble stones, Candy Fashion™ is looking for fun and feelin’ groovy! The sixties were a time filled with lots of changes. Fashion was colorful, rebellious and different than anything we had ever seen. The "Groovy Collection" is a vibrant tribute to a bygone era. With these ensembles, she will definitely make any scene! "Flower Power" is a far out polyester mini-dress complete with matching hair scarf and knee high white go-go boots. "MOD" is straight from the swinging boutiques in London, a lipstick pink metallic knit mini-dress with pink fishnet stockings and pumps. "Paisley" is wearing a hip two-piece brown faux suede cape and bell bottom pants accented with a paisley orange sleeveless shirt, gold ring belt and brown boots."

A Few Of My Older Creations For Candies

These are some of my older creations for Candies.

This is a nightie I made for reproduction Candy. I called this set "A-La Victoria's Secret 'Baby Doll' ", and used Victoria's Secret "Baby Doll" nightie as inspiration. The doll, whose name is Sunny, wore this set as well as the oufit below (also made by me) for St. Valentine's Day.

I made this leather jacket, complete with pockets, out of the jacket my toddler had outgrown. The little tiger cub that used to be on the original jacket's front was sewn into the doll's jacket back.

This is a dress I made for the same doll for Easter/spring, and it can also be seen in Easter doll group pictures on the post about Bonnie Bride and Candy comparrison.

These are the outfits and shoes I made for vintage Candy, whom I named after my best friend Amber.

Spring/Easter dress (it can also be seen on the post about Bonnie Bride's comparrison to Candy dolls). The shoes and the hat are also made by me.

Bonnie Bride and Candy Fashion - very similar dolls

Bonnie Bride by Deluxe Reading

Bonnie Bride was made in 1964 by Deluxe Reading, and basically looked just like a brunette Candy except she wasn’t jointed in the elbows and knees. She also had a lever in her back that activated her to throw flower bouquet attached to her right hand which was molded to hold the flowers. She also originally came with a platform that allowed the bride to “walk down the isle” on her own without the need for batteries. Made of plastic and vinyl.

My doll (pictured below) came in her original dress and shoes, but without the veil and the bouquet.

Lever in the back:

Most Bonnie Bride dolls I’ve seen on eBay, etc.. have unfortunately lost their original bouquets.

You can watch vintage black and white 60’s TV commercial for this doll on YouTube:

Here are some pictures of my Candy Fashion with Bonnie Bride enjoying spring in their homemade Easter dresses. You can see how similar the two dolls are, and because their bodies are built very similar, they can share one wardrobe.

In this picture, you can see the two Candies (vintage and repro) together with Bonnie Bride – my small 2012 Easter display.

(All Easter/spring dresses and vintage Candy's shoes in the pictures above were made by me.)

Charisma's Candy Fashion Dolls

In 2006 Charisma Brands re-released Candy Fashion dolls. The new Candies came with several impressive collections.

1.

"The Original Collection" is an authentic reproduction of Candy's original wardrobe from the 60's. In this collection of outfits she is ready to embrace every season in style. (The image for this post was taken from an old ad on iOffer website.)

2.

"The Camelot Collection" ... As stated on Charisma Brand's website, "Inspired by one of the most influential women of the 20th century, the Camelot Collection is an ensemble of some of the most recognizable fashions of a decade filled with potential and promise for the future. This period was idyllic for many in the world and remembered with pride. Candy Fashion continues to be known as the doll with “the most exquisite clothing."

3.

"The Groovy Collection" is an authentic recreation of some of 1960's popular fashions. "Paisley", "MOD" and "Flower Power" are this Candy's wardrobe choices.

4.

"Starlet Collection" . This Candy is ready for the red carpet in her three incredible classic outfits.

(The image of the box is my own, images in items 2, 3 and 4 are from Charisma Brands's website.)

Candy Fashion Dolls' Story

She was “the dream of every girl”, and for 1962 priced quite expensively at $12.95. Despite the price tag she was a good seller, most likely due to her ability to pose and “the world’s most exquisite clothing” that came with each doll set. Candy Fashion was made by Deluxe Reading Co. and came in a large box that included four detailed outfits, complete with accessories, and three dress forms/mannequins to display her beautiful dresses. Like all Deluxe Reading toys Candy was sold in grocery stores.

Deluxe Reading Co. went out of business in 1972 due to a clerical error that forced the company into bankruptcy, though in the 50’s and 60’s this was the biggest toy plant in the US which was located in NJ.

In 2006 Charisma Brands released several limited edition reproductions of Candy Fashion dolls. Some of them can still be purchased new via Paradise Galleries website. The original Candy doll was 22” and marked “HH” in the back of her head. She was jointed at the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. She also had sleep eyes and rooted hair. Reproduction dolls are 18” tall, have the same type jointed body as the original doll, but stationary glass eyes and a wig.

This photo shows well the difference in height between the original and the reproduction Candies, which is 4". They could be sisters with some age difference, mother and teenage daughter, or even friends if one is quite tall and the other much shorter lol. (Vintage Candy is wearing her original dress, the repro Candy is wearing her original Paisley blouse and jeans made by me.)
